Summer’s Last Gasp-Enjoy these Activities before School Starts!
Enjoy Summer’s Last Gasp! It’s August and the temperatures are soaring, but this is the perfect time to get out and about before the kids head back to school. Listed below are a few of my favorite local activities, grab a water, throw on your sunglasses and sunscreen and head out and have some fun!!
August Dollar Days at the Dallas Arboretum
Enjoy the beginning of summer at the Dallas Arboretum with a picnic and a cool beverage. Admission is just $1 per person at the gate only, with $1 sodas, juice and frozen pops; $2 hot dogs and root beer floats, and $4 ice cream sundaes. Parking is $5 per vehicle and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission to the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden is an additional $1 per person.
Feel free to bring your own food and drink and enjoy it in your favorite part of the garden. Great spots to cool off include the Toad Corners fountains and the misty Fern Dell.
Dive in Movie: Zootopia
Location: Samuell-Grand Swimming Pool
Bring the whole family to enjoy a movie under the stars. Bring a blanket and watch from the deck or float in the pool for the ultimate movie viewing experience. Pool Admission: 11 & Under – $1, 12 & Older – $2
Lego Mosaic Build at LEGOLAND Discovery Center
This summer, LEGOLAND Discovery Center is hitting the road and inviting members of the public to help create a massive Ninjago-theme LEGO mosaic With more than 20 man hours of work to be done, the Master Model Builder will be onsite at stops around Dallas-Fort Worth armed with 79,320 bricks, enlisting the help of LEGO fanatics of all ages to build a nearly 6-foot-tall by 10-foot-wide mosaic featuring Sensei Wu and all six ninjas from the popular LEGO Ninjago toy line and TV show.
Similar to a paint-by-numbers system, the public will use bricks to build small LEGO tiles that will combine together to create the massive image. The completed, permanent mosaic will be unveiled in LEGOLAND Discovery Center’s new Ninjago City Adventure obstacle course on Friday, Sept. 22, opening day of the new animated action-comedy The LEGO Ninjago Movie by Warner Bros. Pictures.
First Friday at the Farm: Paper Crafts at Nash Farm
Friday, August 4th: 10:00-12:00pm
Daily life in Texas during the late 1800’s required knowledge of a number of skills, methods and even recipes that will be demonstrated during the monthly sessions. Participants work alongside Nash Farmhands to learn these heritage skills that can still be utilized in present day.
Each month features a different theme and a participation fee of $3 per person is required. Nash Farm is located at 626 Ball St., Grapevine, and all sessions are scheduled for 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
August 4, Paper Crafts – Make Victorian paper crafts for your parlors
Adventures with Clifford the Big Red Dog
Location: Fort Worth Museum of Science and History
Friday, August 4th, 11:00-1:00pm
Explore Birdwell Island at this fun exhibit that includes a trip on the Birdwell Island Ferry, Clifford’s dog house, Cleo’s backyard and other sites from the popular children’s TV show.
On Fridays and Saturdays (May 27-Sept. 24), meet the Big Red Dog himself. The Clifford mascot will be on site to meet and greet children from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. while Adventures with Clifford The Big Red Dog is on exhibit.
North Dallas Toy Show
Location: Dallas Events Center
Saturday, August 5th, 9:00-3:00pm
The vintage toy show moves to a new, bigger location – the Dallas Events Center. Guests will still find all types of collectibles including Hot Wheels, Action Figures, Comic Books, Transformers, Matchbox cars, Star Wars, Batman, Marvel Legends, DC Comics, Star Trek, Pop Vinyl, Sci-Fi, Horror Trading Cards and more. More than 70 vendor tables to browse.
Flick and Float
Location: Wet Zone Waterpark
Saturday, August 5: 8:00pm
Movie: The Lego Movie
The waterpark stays open late for a night under the stars. Watch a movie while floating in the pool, or from your lawn chair. Admission is $6 (free for season pass holders). Special $6 Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich Combo will be available for those who want dinner and a movie. Gates open at 8 p.m. The movie begins around 8:30 p.m.
